Subaru, Heartland Automotive Resume Shifts, No Word on Ties to FBI Ransomware Case 10/4/19
FROM THE MEDIA: After cancelling shifts on Monday, Sept. 30, 2019, due to a "supplier issue," Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA), Inc. and Heartland Automotive, one of the plant's suppliers, resumed shifts on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019. According to reports, as the two companies resumed operations, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Indianapolis Division confirmed it was investigating ransomware attacks specifically targeting companies throughout Indiana. According to FBI spokesperson Chris Bavender, "The FBI is aware of a ransomware attack and the significant impact that the attack has had on certain companies in the state of Indiana." Although the timing of the FBI's announcement coincides with the two plants resuming normal activity, it remains unclear whether the investigation is related to the plant shutdowns. When asked if such a connection existed, Bavendar stated that details could not be released due to the ongoing investigation. According to SIA spokesperson Craig Koven, who did not disclose the nature of the supplier issue, "In these situations, we typically do not disclose the name of the supplier or the issue … The issue that caused SIA production to be temporarily suspended was at the supplier — not SIA." When asked about issues affecting Heartland Automotive, spokesperson Ritsuko Abrams declined to elaborate and simply stated that "the supplier issue has made progress.".
